Hyukjae simply sat there, not sure what to think. Everyone was up and congratulating the five, but he couldn't find it in himself to move.
A Chinese subgroup.
While he felt happy that Hankyung was able to go home and be with friends and family, he was taking two giant pieces of Hyukjae with him.
His best friend.
And the love of his life.
He wasn't sure how he'd managed it, but the dancer was finally able to drag himself to his feet and wish them all luck, smile plastered on his face.
It was funny that no one noticed the fact that it didn't reach his eyes.
**********
The day Super Junior M left for China was the day that Hyukjae stopped smiling altogether.
**********
Heechul, oddly enough, was the first to notice.
"Hyukkie, come get something to eat with Hyung," Heechul had offered, though it came off as much more of a demand than anything. With a nod and a (fake) smile, the dancer nodded and ran over to where the older singer was waiting. Walking down the hallway toward the cafeteria, Hyukjae was sure that he felt Heechul's eyes on him more than once. Pushing it to the back of his mind, he continued on, talking about random things until they arrived.
Picking out something to eat, the two walked over toward a nearby table and sat down, each opening their drinks.
"What's going on, Hyuk?" Heechul asked conversationally, though it was clear that the question was far deeper than 'how's it going?'.
Heechul always was more insightful than he was usually given credit for.
"I don't know what you mean, Hyung," he replied slowly, smile faltering a bit. It was difficult to remain even falsely upbeat when Heechul was looking at him the way he was, as if analyzing him.
"Is it SJM?"
Hyukjae froze.
Got it in one.
"Thought so. You haven't been yourself since they left. You don't eat much, and I haven't seen you smile since, either." He lifted a hand, effectively cutting off the dancer as his mouth opened to protest. "I don't mean that fake thing that you've had plastered on your face. I mean a real one." Pausing, he leaned forward. "Tell me what's going on in that head of yours."
Swallowing down the lump that had formed without him even knowing, Hyukjae did as he was told. He spoke of missing Donghae...and Kyuhyun, most of all. He went on and on about feeling desperately alone, no matter how many people were around him at the time, only adding to his already lingering sadness over Junsu spending so much time in Japan.
Heechul didn't say a word as he listened to everything his dongsaeng was saying.
"Have you talked to them about it?" he asked once Hyukjae ran out of words. "I know that you've talked to them since."
He shook his head. "I can't. They're already having a hard enough time without me adding to it."
"Don't you think that they might miss you just as much? I mean, Hae's said as much to me."
"Maybe, but Kyu doesn't even know that I like him, so I doubt he feels the same. I mean, Ryeowook's there, and so's that really tall guy. Zhou Mi, right?" He sighed, appetite, or what little one he had, all but gone. "It doesn't matter anyway." Getting to his feet, Hyukjae picked up his half-eaten lunch and threw it away. "Thanks for listening, Hyung," he murmured, walking out of the cafeteria, not noticing Heechul sigh before running his hands through his hair.
**********
Hyukjae was surprised to see Kibum stretched out across his bed as he entered his room, tired from dancing his depression as far into the back of his mind as possible.
"How long have you been here, Kibummie?" he asked as he put his bag down in the corner of the room.
"Long enough," the younger rapper answered before sitting up and motioning for Hyukjae to sit down.
"I need a shower."
"I know that you shower at the studio, so stop trying to avoid me. I know you too well for that to work on me."
It was true. Aside from Donghae and Junsu, he'd never once been able to hide from Kibum. Sighing in resignation, Hyukjae went to his side and sat down beside him, back resting against the headboard.
"What's wrong, Hyukjae?"
"I miss everyone," he sighed. "With everyone doing different things, I just feel left behind."
"And the fact that Kyuhyun's one of the ones away has nothing to do with it."
Why does he have to be so damn smart all the time?
Falling to the side, Hyukjae's head landed on Kibum's shoulder. "That might have something to do with it..."
Kibum chuckled before running a hand through Hyukjae's hair. "Have you considered telling him?"
Hyukjae knew what he meant by that, but playing dumb was something he was quite good at.
"Telling who, what?" At the look on Kibum's face, he remembered belatedly that the actor was always the one who never fell for it. "He doesn't like me, Bummie," he sighed.
"How can you be so sure about that?"
"I just am."
The two remained like that, Hyukjae not once noticing the smirk on Kibum's face.
**********
Something was up.
Heechul and Kibum were being far more clingy than usual and it was more than a little disturbing.
One thing that he failed to notice was the fact that it mostly happened when there was a camera on them.
**********
Why are Heechul and Kibum practically molesting you on camera? Donghae asked curiously three days later when he called to ask said weird question.
"Your guess is as good as mine," he said with a sigh. Hyukjae'd been just as curious as Donghae, if not more.
He was the one being practically molested after all, right?
Well, I was just curious. I mean, Kyu kinda just stormed off, which is why I called... There was a pause before, Not that I didn't want to talk to you, of course! I was planning on calling tonight, in fact! I just meant...
Hyukjae missed the rambling apology, his mind freezing on the part about Kyuhyun.
Why in the world would he storm off? He knew how Heechul and Kibum could be. Well okay, how Heechul could be. Kibum was a bit of a surprise.
...ae...Hyukjae!
Oh right. Donghae.
"Sorry Hae. I was just thinking."
Well, try not to break anything before we get back, Hyuk, Donghae teased just before Hyukjae hung up on him.
**********
Hyukjae stood before Heechul and Kibum, eyes narrowed and arms crossed as he tapped his foot in annoyance at the twin smirks. "You two are planning something," he stated.
"Why, what gives you that idea?" the elder asked, eyes sparkling.
"Because you look like you've figured out how to take over the world."
Kibum chuckled. "It's nothing that grandiose, Hyung."
"Besides," Heechul cut in. "We can't do that without Changmin and Kyuhyun anyway."
Hyukjae stared at the two, secretly wondering when he of all people became the sane one.
**********
Heechul and Kibum's grand master plan came to fruition the day SJM returned.
Looking around, Hyukjae noticed that each of the members looked a bit leary of showing him much attention, with the exception of Donghae, but even he only offered a quick hug rather than his normal back breaking embrace.
"I suggest bracing yourself, Hyukkie," the brunette murmured before pulling away.
That was all the warning he was given.
Before he knew what was happening, Kyuhyun had stormed over to the dancer and pulled him into a deep kiss that stole his breath away. Before Hyukjae even had a chance to return said kiss, the magnae held him close and shot a glare so vicious that even Kangin stepped back.
"Mine," he growled, voice practically oozing jealousy and possessiveness.
Everyone stared.
Kyuhyun glared.
Hyukjae blinked.
"Oh," was all he was able to get out before he was dragged toward his single room.
**********
The moral of this story?
Absence may make the heart grow fonder, but it also makes Kyuhyun one possessive brat...
...and Hyukjae one happy boy!
